How to be a pilot

In 2023 the airline industry had two issues- a national pilot shortage, and a leading lack of diversity amongst working pilots. At the time, less than 7% of pilots were women and less the 10% were people of colour. United airlines responded by building the first ever pilot school with a graduation rate of 50% women and 50% POC- Aviate Academy. We wanted to highlight the fact that there are not just technical barriers to becoming a pilot, but societal, and financial too.

This film shows not only the technical skills, expertise and experience you need to become an elite pilot, but the grit, the tenacity and the passion needed to break barriers and make the flight deck a more diverse place.
